What automatic fall detection can — and can't — do

10 June 2026

Automatic fall detection is one of the most valued features on a safety bracelet — and one of the most misunderstood. GCARE can identify certain fall events and send an alert to designated contacts without the wearer needing to press anything.

But no automatic fall-detection system, from any manufacturer, can guarantee detection of every fall. Slow falls, falls into soft furniture, or very gentle movements can be harder to distinguish from everyday activity. Occasionally, a sudden, strong arm movement — like clapping or an abrupt gesture — can trigger a false alert in the other direction.

The most reliable safety net combines automatic detection with the manual SOS button, which the wearer can press and hold at any time, and with contacts who check in regularly. Fall detection is a valuable layer of protection — not a substitute for attentiveness or the SOS button.
